US Grade 3 - 6
This class is taught in English.
Students will learn how to discuss a novel using story elements (plot, setting, character development, and language). Students will learn the literary terms: inference, theme, metaphor, simile, climax, and resolution.
In my professional career, I've worked with children from various socioeconomic backgrounds with all kinds of family structures. I've led previous book clubs in-person and online featuring this book so I'm familiar with kids' responses to the rough opening scene. Most kids are more freaked out by the idea of a pencil being shoved partway up someone's nose rather than anything to do with mean foster parents or bullies.

Bud is a 10 year old boy on the run during the Great Depression. Bud has escaped an orphanage and a bad foster home. The story opens with a scene that includes the protagonist getting a pencil up his nose, a fight with a kid bully, and two mean adult foster parents. From there, the story eases up and includes a lot of humor and wonderful, trustworthy adult characters.
