Class Experience

Children absolutely love the Pigeon! Students will develop comprehension skills and knowledge of author's craft while we read and discuss the unique techniques used by Mo Willems. After the read aloud, students will analyze how the author uses speech bubbles, exclamation marks, capital letters and movement lines in the illustrations to tell his story. After the discussion, students will be introduced to basic lines and shapes used in art. Students will draw and review various shapes and their names, such as circles, triangles, rectangles and ovals. Then, they will create a guided drawing of the main character and include one of the techniques used by Mo Willems. Directed drawing lessons are a great way to encourage listening and following directions, and strengthen those little hands to improve fine motor skills. At the end of class, each student will have an opportunity to share their finished drawing. The class will be taught using teacher modeling, teacher think alouds, guided questions, class discussion and art.
