Does essay writing seem like a daunting task to your learner? Let's break it down to manageable parts and truly understand *why* each part is important!

In this class, there will be an interactive lesson with opportunities for students to practice the skills learned in class-wide, individual, and competitive game ways! After each class, a "student-paced" Nearpod link will be shared so that students can review the notes from class with ease and add their own writings to the collaboration boards at the end of each lesson.

Students will get to practice their new essay writing skills, posting their own writings on a collaboration board for peer and teacher feedback and support. It is highly encouraged to write a short essay of their choosing as they work through the different components in this class.

Class 1:
Your Essay Roadmap | Write Thesis Statements That Are Powerful and Organized
-In this class, we will dive into the world of thesis statements, why they are important, and most importantly, how you can write a powerful and structured thesis statement to set your essay up for success.
-After an interactive Nearpod lesson including information slides, collaboration boards, polls, fill-in-the-blank practice, matching games, "Draw It" activities, and quizzes, students will have a collaboration board dedicated to *their* thesis statements where they will share for peer and teacher feedback.

Class 2:
Set the Stage | Learn to Write Powerful and Organized Essay Introductions
-In this class, we will break down each part of an engaging essay introduction, talk about its importance, learn to craft effective introduction elements, and learn to seamlessly put it together to set the stage for essay success.
-After an interactive Nearpod lesson including information slides, collaboration boards, polls, and an online crossword puzzle game, students will have a collaboration board dedicated to *their* conclusion paragraphs where they will share for peer and teacher feedback.

Class 3:
Idea Islands | Write Body Paragraphs to Take Readers on a Well Thought-Out Tour
-Keeping your ideas together when writing an essay can be challenging. There are so many ways you could go! Let's learn how to keep the ideas organized using a fun tropical island analogy and game!
-After an interactive Nearpod lesson including information slides, collaboration boards, a "Draw It" activity, fill-in-the-blank practice, and a Time to Climb class-wide competition, students will have a collaboration board dedicated to *their* favorite body paragraph they have created for their essay. Peers and Mrs. Zerr will share helpful (and kind) feedback that will help them to grow with encouragement.

Class 4:
Make Your Last Stand | Write Powerfully Clear and Convincing Essay Conclusions
-Conclusions can be challenging for many students. In this class, we break down how to write clear, concise, and well-organized conclusions that help your young writer make one last stand for their thoughts.
-After an interactive Nearpod lesson including information slides, collaboration boards, polls, fill-in-the-blank practice, and quizzes, students will have a collaboration board dedicated to *their* conclusion paragraphs where they will share for peer and teacher feedback. We can all help each other to improve and celebrate our victories!

To access the Google Doc handouts, students will need to have access to a Google account. If one is not available, please message me and I will be happy to send a PDF or Microsoft Word version. At New Horizons Academy, we understand how difficult setting your family's schedule can be, juggling everyone's activities and classes. To honor that time commitment, we are proud to be able to offer another of our organization's Outschool-approved and trained teachers (Mrs. Becky, Teacher Carissa, Ms. Monica, or Teacher Donna) in the rare occurrence of teacher illnesses or urgent personal events. This will allow you to keep your schedule in-tact as much as possible and keep the learning going! --- External Resource: Lumio by SMART Lumio by SMART is an interactive lesson resource similar to Nearpod that engages learners through polls, games, sharing, as well as workspaces for individuals, groups, and the whole class! It’s a great way to elevate the learning experience. To join class, students will: 1. Go to hellosmart.com. 2. Students can connect to class by signing in with their Google or Microsoft accounts, or they can join as GUESTS with a lesson code and simply type in their names/nicknames. 3. Teaching--especially in English, writing, and language arts--is a true passion of mine. I graduated Cum Laude from Kansas State University in 2010 with a Secondary Education degree in English and Journalism, and then went on to teach in the public schools before setting off on my own as an online teacher and tutor.

My philosophy of education is to make it as fun, personalized, and as interactive as possible for the kids. I always try to even out my direct instruction/lecture time with plenty of opportunities for students to practice these new skills, take polls, play review games, and collaborate with peers.

I am happily married to my husband Brad, and we have two beautiful daughters, Sophia and Elise. We currently reside in Kansas in a small town, and we love the small town life.

Oh, and Zerr is pronounced "Zarr," so it rhymes with "car." 😉
