Class experience

Learners will develop their critical thinking skills, engage in the scientific method and test their hypotheses through hands-on experiments that explore these concepts...

- States of matter / air pressure / Bernoulli's Principle
- Electricity / conductors / insulators / static electricity
- Surface tension / properties of water
- Chemical vs. physical reactions
- Environmental polymers / absorbency
- Density
- Color mixing
- Newton's Laws of Motion / Inertia
- Scientific inquiry / scientific method / design engineering / critical thinking skills / creativity

The activities and learning experiences in this course help to reinforce the core skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. Each of the hands-on experiments are purposely designed to encourage the student to extend their learning by asking new questions that lead to additional experimentation with new moments of discovery. Steve builds his lessons on the 5E learning model - Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. This planned sequence of instruction places students at the center of learning.
About Steve Spangler

Steve Spangler is a best-selling author, television personality and STEM educator branded by TIME Magazine as one of their “most influential people of the year” because of his passion to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. With more than 1,500 television appearances and multiple Emmy awards to his credit, Steve is also a regular guest on the Ellen DeGeneres Show where she dubbed him America’s Science Teacher. Steve’s catalog of videos featured on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and now TikTok have close to 1 billion views, and his books and online experiments are widely used by parents and educators to increase student engagement and inspire young scientists to learn more about STEM-based careers.

Steve started his career as an elementary science teacher in Littleton, Colorado. Today, most of his efforts are focused on professional development for teachers who are eager to study his engagement strategies for making STEM an integral part of the student's learning experience.
YOUR REGISTRATION INCLUDES A STEM CAMP KIT!

That's right, Steve will be sending you a box of materials for your young scientist to use throughout the entire week of camp. This box of materials is required to conduct the experiments and activities featured in this course. After you register for the course, you will be given a link to a form where you can enter your shipping information (no extra charge) so we can send you the kit.

In addition to the special supplies included in your kit, here are the “You-Get-It” items that you’ll need for camp sometime during the week. Please don’t stress… this is all common stuff you’ll find around the house.

•	Pitcher or container of water (every day)
•	Paper towel (every day)
•	Scissors (every day)
•	Empty bowl (everyday) Just to have on hand to clean up any spills.
•	Metal spoon
•	Penny
•	Index card or old business card
•	Bucket of water - Think about a bucket that you would use to wash your car. Your young scientist will fill the bucket with soapy water to use on the third day - Bubbleology.
•	Your favorite dish soap - We’ve found the Dawn to work well, but your young scientist can use whatever you have at home to wash dishes. The kit comes with two kinds of soap to try, but Steve will suggest that your young scientist try the soap that they use at home.
The #1 question we get from parents is... Is this going to be messy? No, don't worry. All of the experiments and activities can be conducted at the kitchen countertop or on a table. We suggest that you have a roll of paper towel or a few kitchen towels close by to wipe up spilled water.

That brings up the second most asked question... Where is the best place to set-up our lab? Judging from photos that parents share, most students use the kitchen countertop as their place of learning. It's a good idea to place your computer laptop or tablet device on something that will keep it dry and out of harms way.

What can YOU do to help support your young scientist? The hardest part of your job is NOT to do the experiments for your young scientist. Oh, we know the temptation is going to be great. You’re going to want to get in there and do it yourself… but don’t. Wait until the scientist goes to bed and then you can play with the goodies in the STEM Camp kit.

Most importantly, if you are enthusiastic about exploration and scientific discovery, your enthusiasm is bound to be contagious.
STEM Science Kit is included in the price of the class and will be shipped to you the week of class.
