Class Experience

The purpose of this course is to guide students in developing their own YouTube channel. An individualized plan will be developed by each student, using teacher guidance and anecdotal & historical examples that have yielded positive results. Video examples and a graphic presentation will be used for visual aids.

Discussions will be a primary element of this lesson. It is important that students ask questions so that guidance can be provided to better assist content creators in developing a personalized plan. Questions that will be answered throughout this lesson: What are the goals for your channel? Are they purely financial or personal? What sort of content do you want to create? Should you follow trends or should you be a trailblazer? What sorts of supplies and equipment will you need? Can I exploit the YouTube algorithm to increase exposure? We will attempt to answer these questions by covering goal setting, desired content, supplies, and strategies for publishing videos.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a high school History teacher with 7 years experience and I host a YouTube channel that caters primarily to an older audience of retro gamers. I also feature other content such as arcade building guides. I started regularly producing content, which I consider to be 1 video a week, in January of 2020. I have gained a following of about 1500 subscribers and amassed over 200,000 watch minutes since the debut of my channel. While it is still just a hobby and I have not commited to the channel full-time, I have found a lot of success being a part-time YouTuber and I feel I can share what I have learned with others who could potentially find more success if they are able to invest a substantial amount of time into their product.
