Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Students will learn to cut a hole in an index card large enough to step through.

Class will begin with the instructor issuing the challenge. Students will have approximately 5 minutes to attempt the challenge with no instructions.

We will then have a discussion about what we tried and why it did or did not work. Did you try removing part of the card? Did we try stretching the card? Did the card stay intact as one piece?

Next we will explore and calculate the area of our index cards, and the approximate surface area of a hula hoop. Why can we step through one but not the other?

Finally, students will be instructed in the precise way to cut their index cards to create a hole that is large enough for them to step through.

Learning Goals

Students will have fun as they gain a better understanding of surface area.
They will also learn a fun trick they can use to impress their friends and family!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm an avid reader, and an author.
I was never so surprised in all my life as when my son told me he "just wasn't into reading" and that he thought "writing was the worst part of school." I had to think quick before he missed out on all the magic that I knew was waiting for him within the pages of books.
And so family book club was born. And then books and friends, and soon my house was overflowing with reluctant readers bouncing up and down and waiting desperately to tell Miss Tammi all their favorite bits from last week's reading.
I have spent ten years coaxing children into eager readers and confident writers. I love to watch those smiles light up when they realize there is a whole hidden world inside of books. In that world they never need to try to fit in, or please other people. In that world they are welcomed, they are wanted, and they are inspired.
