Beginner Level
This class walks through the the technology inside a typical 4 cycle internal combustion engine. Not only will we be exploring the technology, but we will actually BUILD a working model (working = parts moving under battery power). This is designed to cover the important components that make an engine work, one at a time, step by step. Each week we will be building the next step of the model and learning how those components work in a real car. The combination of building while learning is incredibly powerful! NOTE: This class requires handing small plastic parts and installing screws. Adult supervision may be required depending on the capabilities of the student. We want everyone to be successful! You MUST purchase the engine kit and have it available by at least the second week.
Learning Goals
Understand how a 4 cycle engine works, with its many variations and advancements, through handling models of the parts and exploring the technology involved.

Other Details
Learning Needs
This is definitely a hands on class, for those who learn by touching and doing.
Parental Guidance
Some of the steps require careful positioning and small part handling. IT may be wise to have an adult available during the build sessions in case it becomes a bit too difficult.
Pre-Requisites
Students must be able to use a screwdriver and follow instruction to build a model with screws in plastic parts.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Early on in life I became fascinated by cars and the technology that makes them work. As a teenager I was tasked with maintaining the family business fleet of cars and trucks, which included diesels. I was rebuilding diesel injection pumps and tuning engines back in high school. This work/hobby has stayed with me through the decades as I maintained the understanding of the evolving technologies until today I maintain all my own farm equipment on my small farm.
Couple the experience of how to do things with the deep understanding of how and why they work, and then add a unique ability to explain things in a easy to grasp way, and that describes this class.
