Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
When readers are born, it is not only phonics and fluency that make us successful; it is the personal connections we develop with characters and story themes that truly strengthen our literacy muscles. This individual and personal element of being a reader is the touchstone of this course! Together, as a classroom 'family', all readers' voices are encouraged, respected and celebrated -- by me and in the dynamic of one another.

Each live class will be discussion-based, with a welcoming weekly prompt (in the form of a Classroom thread) that I lovingly call the 'Question Bowl'. Within this thread (and PRIOR to class), students can send topics of interest/ new vocabulary/ text situations/ character behaviors etc., directly from the week's reading, that they would like me to bring up for class discussion amongst their peers. I will write each 'entry' down (including my own!) and put each topic into just what you imagine -- a Question Bowl -- to be pulled out and discussed at random during class. This is NOT mandatory, but warmly welcome!

Students will do each week's reading outside of class (schedule below), in whichever format they wish: independent reading, shared reading, reading aloud, etc. Books are encouraged to be enjoyed in any and all 'best fit' mode; it is truly our ability to take in and make connections to a story that is the most meaningful here. As we know, every new story we journey into offers diverse challenges of new vocabulary and context!

My only 'requirement' is that if you choose to read ahead (don't you love when a story takes you in?), I respectfully ask all students to not give * * any * * story surprises!

READING SCHEDULE:

Week ONE: Chapters 1 and 2
Week TWO: Chapters 3 and 4
Week THREE: Chapters 5 and 6
Week FOUR: Chapters 7 and 8
