Beginner Level
In this immersive and fun 6 week course, students will immediately begin to learn how to speak with a British Dialect using a series of exercises designed for success. Each class will build upon the foundations of proper articulation, key sounds, vowel substitutions, dipthongal changes, consonant substitutions and special pronunciations. Each student will learn a little bit about the International Phoenetic Alphabet, which is an important element in learning any dialect or accent. By week three, we will begin with outside source material a student chooses to bring in (a short poem/monologue/excerpt from a book, television show or movie) to apply the skills they have learned from the weeks prior. In week four, we will work the material together as a preparation for the final class. In week five we will have our individual evaluations for dialect fluency where each student will present their material to the rest of the class using all of the fundamentals we have learned over the term of the course.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the proper execution of a British dialect- they will learn how to manipulate and shape key sounds, vowels, and dipthongs. They will learn special pronunciations for typical words spoken in a standard English dialect.
Students will learn a little bit about the International Phoenetic Alphabet and how to utilize it in learning a British dialect. They will be able to apply the skills taught in this class to translate nearly any piece of text into a believable accent.
