US Grade 7 - 9
Beginner - Advanced Level
Want to ace your SSAT's? Join me for an intensive course that tackles the content and format of the SSAT! Previous experience with the SSAT welcome but not necessary. This course will focus on each of the 3 major scored sections of the Upper Level test: Reading, Verbal, and Quantitative, Together we'll practice each section with the most efficient and accurate SSAT learning tools. We will also analyze the format and scoring of the SSAT, common pitfalls in SSAT study, and look at test-taking strategies. Time may be given to consider students' high school choices and the broader application process. The course will meet 1x per week for a total of 6 sessions. Students do not need to purchase any materials, although additional SSAT resources and test experiences students bring are welcome. A typical session has a seminar format. I begin the session with a brief lecture on the material, with most of the session given over to open discussion on passages and practice sets. The course syllabus is as below: Session I: SSAT Overview and Synonyms Session II: Analogies Session III: Reading I Session IV: Reading II Session V: Quantitative Session VI: Review and Final Questions While the class is designed to help students take the SSAT with confidence and obtain the score they need, the class also connects SSAT study with learning objectives beyond the test. For example, not only is memorizing Latin and Greek roots a surefire way to improve one's Verbal score, it's also a way to pick up foundational building blocks of the English lexicon. Throughout the course, I emphasize critical reading, vocabulary acquisition, and fundamental math skills.
