Beginner Level
Squishmallow STEAM is a 5 week class that focuses on a new STEAM concept each week. For each class, we'll have show & tell, followed by a lesson that includes information about that day's STEAM concept (the meaning of each letter of STEAM, examples of who uses it and why they use it, examples of that concept, etc). After the lesson, students will be guided through a STEAM experiment or project that involves using their Squishmallow. We'll talk about predictions, research, launching the experiment, outcomes, and if any redesigning of the idea would help it have a more positive outcome. Having a cuddly Squishmallow helps keep the class in full creative mode and takes away the feeling of being pressured to get the experiments right the first time (because even if a Squishmallow falls to the floor, it's still cute and we all get to giggle!). STEAM Concepts: Week 1 - S for Science - making a balance scale for your Squishmallow Week 2 - T for Technology - Squishmallow coding Week 3 - E for Engineering - build a tower to support your Squishmallow Week 4 - A for Art - making a Squishmallow agamograph Week 5 - M for Math - using nonstandard measurements with your Squishmallow A Squishmallow isn't required for this class. You're welcome to bring any stuffy to work with! I recommended using Squishmallows between 5-16 inches tall (12.7-40.64 cm). Anything outside of that size recommendation will be difficult to work with.
Learning Goals
Students will learn a wide range of STEAM vocabulary. They'll begin to understand concepts of critical thinking, problem solving, theorizing, and developing.

From Miss Ashley: I have always loved to work with young children! Ever since I was a kid, I was very creative in coming up with unique ways of expressing myself. That uniqueness carried over into my adult life, and that is what brings me here today! I love being a part of a child’s yearn to learn and I believe that learning is always fun. I’m a mom to two amazing kiddos, both currently in elementary school. Before having my kids, I had 7 years experience in working with children primary-aged through elementary school. I was an assistant Pre-K teacher followed by working at various summer camps through my local Parks & Recreation department. I’ve worn many hats throughout life but my favorite one is being a mom. I love my wonderful husband, my amazing kiddos, my 3 crazy cats, sewing and gardening.
