The students will create a drawing at the end of class to present to everyone and talk about what they learned about each spider.Class Experience
US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
This four-week class will teach the students all about some amazing spiders. Each week we will explore a new spider. We will talk about what the spider eats, what might try to eat it, where it lives in the world, and interesting facts about each different spider. The students will be sent some coloring pages and will complete a few drawings at the end of the class. Spying on Spiders is a very engaging and active class. The students will have a chance to share their background knowledge and be encouraged to interact with other students. This class will help build social skills and is a great building block for expected school behavior. Please Note: These classes have been taught in the Backyard Bug Club. Please check if your learner has already taken any of these spider classes previously. In each class: *They will practice writing the name of the spider. *See a map of where the spider is found in the world. *Play an interactive game as a class. *See videos and pictures of each spider. *Make and discuss observations. *Practice taking turns and raising their hand. *The students will each have time to share their art. *Have fun! My teaching style: I enjoy having fun while teaching and politely encouraging my student to remember the rules to help the class run smoothly. I always want the students to share and interact as much as possible while allowing shy learners to watch and engage as they feel comfortable. I strive to help all learning types feel included in my class. My goal is to have your student share all the interesting facts they have learned for days after the class. My personal style of teaching is engaging, energetic, enthusiastic, with a touch of silly. I hope to share my passion for learning about all living creatures with each of my students.
Learning Goals
The students will be able to describe four different spiders. They will be able to describe where each spider can be found and its characteristics.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Illinois Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Western Illinois University
I am a certified K-9th grade teacher with 16 years of experience teaching students in various educational settings. Throughout my career, I have designed and led engaging science-based lessons tailored to young learners, incorporating hands-on activities, storytelling, and interactive discussions to spark curiosity about the natural world.
I have previously taught classes on insects and arachnids, where students explored different species, their habitats, and their ecological roles. In my online classes, I create age-appropriate lessons that integrate science, geography, zoology, and biology, helping children develop a deeper understanding of these fascinating creatures.
As an educator, I emphasize observation and discovery-based learning. My students have enjoyed drawing and labeling different spider species, learning about their silk-spinning abilities, and understanding their importance in ecosystems. My background in teaching young learners ensures that I present information in a fun and accessible way, making potentially “scary” creatures like spiders feel exciting and approachable.
Additionally, I have experience working with children in online and in-person classrooms, helping them build confidence in scientific inquiry. My teaching approach fosters curiosity, encouraging students to ask questions, make connections, and develop a respect for all living things—including spiders!
