Want something really pretty to give to a loved one without spending a lot of money? A homemade gift means so much! Mother's Day is here! Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up soon! But everyone likes a bouquet of flowers. Especially ones that can last a very long time. In this class, we will make a bunch of coffee filter flowers using the science of chromatography. Chromatography is a technique used to separate mixtures. In this case we will separate washable markers into streaks of colors on our coffee filters. When the petals are dry you can wrap them in a pipe cleaner. I will show you how to do this so you can do it after class if your petals are still wet in class. Supplies: -round white coffee filters -washable markers (the thicker the better - all the colors, including brown and black) -small cups filled with an inch of water each -coffee sheet or drying rack to lay them flat to dry - pipe cleaners - scissors (parent supervision)
Learning Goals
The learners will create one or more coffee filter flowers to give to someone.
They will see how colors are made and how they can separate into different colors.

Parental Guidance
This class can be a little messy for the youngest learners so having an adult nearby can be helpful.
Cutting is optional, but having a parent nearby when scissors are being used is highly recommended.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I love looking around me and asking questions. "What if....?" Science is full of "what if" questions. Come explore simple science experiments with me. Most of the items can be found around your home or easily found at the store. I also have a love for math... especially math games. Join me as we make math fun! Many parents and learners appreciate the way I bring laughter to the classroom.
I have been an educator for 10 years: online ESL teacher for 5 years, and a Kindergarten teacher for 5 years before that. I have worked with children of all ages in various summer school and online activities. I have a Bachelor's in Music Education from Boise State University and a Masters in Pastoral Studies from Multnomah University. I live in Idaho, USA with my husband and my 2 young daughters (Ages 2 and 5). We enjoy reading books, getting a little messy, and taking walks together.
