Class Experience

Welcome to our Spring Break Book Club Camp! We're hoping that joining our book club will add a little bit of fun, a little bit of socialization, and a whole lot of reading to your child's Spring Break. The goal of our Spring Break Book Club Camp is to help your child fall in love with reading and/or further their love of reading by getting their hands on a contemporary and engaging book. As a part of our Book Club Camp, students will engage in thought-provoking conversations about the book, exchange perspectives, and get to know peers their own age who also have a love of reading.

Book Selection for our camp: "Hook's Daughter: The Untold Tale of a Pirate Princess"

We will jump right in, and students should have the first assigned reading completed prior to coming to the first class. Each day we will tackle a new part of the book, which students will read with a provided reading guide. There will also be a list of discussion questions that students should try to answer, and will be the starting point for our class meetings each week. Our class time will be spent on a short lecture with visuals and class slides, hands on activities and games, and group book discussion over the chapters read.

Schedule
 • Day 1: Hook's Daughter: The Untold Tale of a Pirate Princess, chapters 1-7
 • Day 2: Hook's Daughter: The Untold Tale of a Pirate Princess, chapters 8-14
 • Day 3: Hook's Daughter: The Untold Tale of a Pirate Princess, chapters 15-21
 • Day 4: Hook's Daughter: The Untold Tale of a Pirate Princess, chapters 22-28
 • Day 5: Hook's Daughter: The Untold Tale of a Pirate Princess, chapters 28-34

***We will also be playing an interactive game each day to review the content of the previous chapters read. Each day I will post a direct link to the game in the zoom chat. Students will need to be able to click the link provided, which will open up the game in an internet browser's tab. Students will need to feel comfortable navigating back and forth as needed between the game and zoom. Or students can access the game via a 2nd electronic device, like a tablet or phone. They will go to their internet app and type in the link to join in their internet browser's web address area. A parent/guardian might be needed to assist with this***
Learning Goals
My main goal is to help all of my students develop a love for reading!

Other goals for the book study course include:
•To think independently about the issues raised in the readings
•To verbally communicate any interpretations, questions, and information about the readings
•To become more comfortable as students share their thoughts about the book in a safe, positive environment
•To improve reading comprehension skills
•To learn the different elements of a story
•To have fun

I have created several handouts and activities to go along with this book club that will be sent via pdf (and also posted in the classroom). Hola Outschool families!

My name is Teacher Maddie, and I am grateful that you're checking out my profile! I am an engaging, effective, student-centered educator, who believes that the best educational experiences are a perfect mixture of learning and fun! ! I am passionate about helping students of all ages develop a love of learning, especially when it comes to the Spanish language. As a 3rd generation Spanish immigrant, I have always felt a connection to the Spanish language and culture, and have worked very hard throughout my life to achieve near-native fluency.

I am a 2nd generation Spanish teacher, and have been teaching Spanish for over 14 years! I have taught students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels! My classroom experience includes teaching: Spanish 1, Spanish 2, Spanish 3, Spanish 4, Spanish 5, and AP Spanish. I also have experience teaching Honors Spanish classes, and at an Elementary Immersion School. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in Spanish, a Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in Spanish, and I am certified to teach Spanish K-12. I also have experience with curriculum creation, and hold various TESOL certificates. My Spanish teaching methodology is based on a mixture of TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) and Comprehensible Input.

Outside of teaching I love: reading, animals, Harry Potter, scuba diving/the ocean, taking my dog Harley on walks, snuggling with my cats (Kiwi, Mango, Winx, and Gizmo), and watching my daughter play soccer and basketball. My daughter is half Mexican, and has proudly been raised in a bilingual and bicultural home.
