Class Experience

History is an adventure!
Let's learn about history in fun small-dose sections. Today's topic is the Culper Spy Ring!
In this class we will spend 30 minutes talking about the Culper Spy Ring and introducing students to the important historical facts about this group and how they helped the birth of the United States of America. We will journey with historical figures such as George Washington to discover what happened in the Americas way back in the 1700s. The Culper Spy Ring was created during the Revolutionary War to pass information and messages. The agents would get information about troop movements, plans and even about traitors! We will learn the names of some of the key players (George Washington, Abraham Woodhull, Robert Townshend, Nathan Hale...) as well as some of the ways they would pass along the information. We will also briefly discuss how this was important in winning the Revolutionary War. .
The last 30 minutes of class will involve a fun teacher led craft allowing students to see that learned history is fun!
Discussion and questions are encouraged as students this age love to share what they know!

Parental Guidance
One of our crafts is invisible ink. Kids will need to use heat (strongly emphasized that it must be with an adult) to reveal the words. The quickest heat source is flame from a candle or lighter, a hair dryer or light bulb can work but takes about 20-30 minutes of constant heat. Parents will need to help their children reveal their secret code.

I have a minor in history and love learning about a variety of events. I find learning history fun, but it has been gained the reputation of being boring through the years. My goal with my Spotlight History classes is to introduce different historical topics to elementary age students in a fun, positive away in an effort to get them excited about history and realize that learning can be a great, fun adventure!
