Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
The spelling of homonyms and homophones, words that have the same pronunciation but different spellings and meanings, can be tricky to remember. In this class, students will learn mnemonic devices and visual spelling clues to help them distinguish between pairs of homonyms and homophones. This class also encourages learners to look at a word in a way that will help them remember how it is spelled, i.e. by where the vowels are placed, or familiar words embedded in the word that clue you into its meaning, etc. This is particularly helpful for words that don’t follow standard spelling rules and for visual learners and those who need extra tools to make the spelling of words stick.

There are 8 lessons in this class, each with one instructional video. Each video will be 10-12 minutes long and cover 4 pairs of homonym words. In the videos, the definition of each word will be reviewed and mnemonic devices and visual tips to remember the difference between the 2 words will be introduced. Students will then be prompted to complete the sentence practice worksheets and create their own flashcards (one with the word and one with a picture). I will show examples for every flashcard. It is suggested to pause the video after each homonym pair is introduced so the learner can make the flashcards that are modeled.

Students should plan to watch the video, make their word & picture flashcards modeled in the video, then complete the partnering worksheet posted in the Classroom. Students should post their worksheets and images of their flashcards to the Classroom twice a week for teacher feedback.

By completing the worksheets and creating flashcards, students will be able to practice and reinforce what was learned in the class videos. This also provides the opportunity for the teacher to gauge the student's progress and understanding. By the end of the 4-week course, students will have 32 pairs of homonym flashcards with words and pictures to use at home that will reinforce what was learned in class. These flashcards are great for games, such as Memory!

Please note that the weekly price of this class reflects that 2 lessons are taught each week, not just 1. The pricing of my Flex classes is consistent with the pricing of my Live classes.

A self-paced course allows a learner to cover the material at times convenient for them. Students are encouraged to check in with the teacher anytime during the course using the Outschool Classroom.

Private messages or Classroom comments are usually responded to within 24 hours.

**The spelling words taught in class are about a 2nd - 3rd-grade level. However, older children who have trouble remembering which spelling to use for these homophones would benefit from the class.**
Learning Goals
