There is no "hack" or quick way to learn to speed read that works for everyone. However, there are ways that people can learn to read faster. The class will introduce ways of practicing with the purpose of increasing reading speed for students to practice on their own after the class is over. Reading will begin with passages from modern passages, not old-fashioned paragraphs from old speed reading books. Passages will be what most students are used to seeing, with a focus on increasing speed through active, guided practice. The class time will focus on practicable skills, with example and samples available for practice. Students will be given a "checklist" of skills to focus on while they practice on their own time. Practice will focus on "real-world" reading samples, including common styles of novels, news articles, and websites.
Reading passages will be provided at the first classes.
I'm a life long reader, consistently reading since childhood. I've always been a fast reader, something I didn't notice until college, when reading for class became a challenge for so many students. I consistently read more chapters than classmates, which I took for granted throughout high school. In college, I learned some of why I read so fast, so I can teach some techniques to students... The rest will be up to practice.
