Class Experience

Speak With Confidence & Respect! Setting Boundaries W/Assertive Communication.

In this one-time class students will learn to speak with confidence and respect while they learn to set boundaries with assertive communication. Students will define communication, learn about 3 different ways of communicating (body language, tone of voice and words spoken), the 3 different communication styles (assertive, aggressive and passive and how we communicate affects outcomes of conversations and how others perceive us. These skills will give students the ability to speak with confidence and respect.

In class students will identify their communication style as well identify styles based on scenarios they will be given in class. This is important for students to learn to be able to identify by paying attention to the other person's communication (assertive, aggressive, passive) (body language, tone of voice and words spoken). Students will be given the opportunity to act out a scenario using the communication style they choose from passive, aggressive assertive; their fellow classmates will guess the style of communication the student chose. Then if they choose (to help practice using assertiveness) can react out that scenario using assertive communication. (Please note - students will have to have their cameras on in class to participate and each class has to have a minimum of 2 students for the class - less than 2 the teacher may reach out to the parents within 24 hours prior to class time to see about rescheduling/transferring into another section).

Students will also be introduced to I-Statements and how I-Statements are important to telling others how they feel, rather than placing blame on others. Students will reflect on a pass conversation/situation that did not go so well and practice a "re-do" by modifying their last conversation/situation with a do overusing the I-Statement. A worksheet is available to download once you sign up for class, the worksheet is needed to complete this activity (students who are unable to print the worksheet, can bring a piece of paper and pen/pencil to class).

Class time starts sharply at our class time, any students who are late for class by 10 minutes will not be admitted to class and will have to sign up for another class (no refunds are given). If no students come to class (teacher will wait 10 minutes) within the first 10 minutes, class will be canceled, and no refunds are given.

Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a Masters in Social Work, where I specialize in working with children on building their self -confidence. I have worked for 4 years in a residential program with young girls who have had a hard time communicating effectively and have low self -esteem, my goal as their counselor was to teach them the tool they needed to learn how to communicate more effectively and build their self-esteem. I have also been teaching on Outschool for over a year, teaching kids how to cook/bake, crafts and working with girls on to build their self-esteem.
