Has your child taken beginning Spanish classes? Do you want your child to retain and expand on those language skills over the summer? ¡Felicidades! You found the perfect class! This course will provide your child with a friendly, immersive setting that will allow him or her to practice reading and speaking skills in a small group setting. I will utilize engaging multimedia presentations and ebooks that will encourage the group to push themselves to speak in Spanish. English will only be used to scaffold or clarify our learning. This is the best way to learn a new language. I am a full-time dual-language educator with over 20 years of teaching experience. I will do my best to make this a fun class where your child feels safe and comfortable, that is always my top priority. Learning a new language is difficult. *A link/pdf to the ebook will be sent a week before class in case your child wants to get in some practice reading before the class so that they are better prepared. Each child will take a turn reading to work on fluency. We will alternate each week between non-fiction and non-fiction books. We will read a variety of topics in this class, such as animals, seasons, and hobbies. Week of June 14 Las Mariquitas por Anthony Curran June 21 Ali y Oli por Katherine Page June 28. Cae la nieve por Nigel Pepperhouse July 5 No class this week July 12. Aprendemos a Nadar por Sarah Ghusson July 19. Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I am a bilingual teacher with 18 years of experience. I have worked with students mostly in the primary grades in a public school setting. I have taught children of all capacities English and Spanish. I love seeing the growth students make from the beginning to the end of the school year. It brings a smile to my face when I reflect and am astonished how far each child has come. I also teach ESL online to students ranging from the ages of five through fifteen. I graduated from DePaul University with a bachelor's in Accounting and four years later switched careers. I then received a Masters in Education from Northern Illinois University and went into teaching. I grew up in Chicago and then neighboring suburbs where Spanish is spoken everywhere. I have been bilingual for as far as I could remember. As the eldest child in my family, I would often interpret for my parents. I know how learning more languages can be an advantage and also enrich a person's cultural perspective. I love both of my languages equally, therefore I plan on teaching classes in both. I enjoy teaching grammar, vocabulary, reading, math, and social studies. I will make your child feel welcomed whenever they are in my classroom. As a teacher, I have found that once this is established and children feel comfortable they can then enjoy learning. In my free time, I am a mom to teenage boys and a fur mommy to my Yorkie named Sookie. My hobbies are jogging, cooking, reading, and watching Netflix. Thank you for your time. I hope to see you in my classroom!
