Class Experience

In "Spanish Immersion Cooking: Bolivian Cuñapés (Gluten Free Cheese Bread)," students will learn to make cuñapés, a delicious and gluten free Bolivian snack. Cuñapés are a cheesy, biscuit-like snack. While we are cooking, students will practice their Spanish listening and comprehension skills as they follow the teacher’s recipe and directions. If time allows, the teacher will engage students in conversation by asking questions related to food, travel, culture, etc. My kitchen classroom is a safe, fun, and relaxed environment where students can feel free to ask questions and learn from their mistakes. My goal is that my students have fun while learning. After class, I hope that each student can share some cuñapés and a little piece of Bolivia with a family member or friend. Learning and sharing about other cultures is one step in making our world a more loving and accepting place. ¡Nos vemos en la cocina!

*Student Skill Level: This class is immersive and will be taught completely in Spanish at an advanced/fluent speaking level. Students of all skill levels are welcome to join, but it is expected that students only speak or ask/answer questions in Spanish. Perfection is not a requirement. Making mistakes and learning from them is one of the best ways to improve language skills. If a student would prefer to ask/answer questions in the chat box, I ask that they use the best possible Spanish that they can. I will respond to those messages strictly in Spanish. Before class, I will post the ingredient/supply list in Spanish in the classroom. I will also send the English version to parents. Students are welcome to use the English version as a reference guide if needed during class.

*Allergy/Dietary Restrictions: This recipe is gluten free. This recipe contains dairy. Please feel free to send me a message to discuss substitutions and ways your student may still be able to make this recipe!

*Please note that class time may vary depending on the number of students and how long each student may take to complete the steps.

Cooking: Having lived in Bolivia for four years, I've enjoyed lots of delicious Bolivian dishes! My recipes always come from Bolivian friends that are wonderful cooks! I have also worked as a cook in an industrial kitchen at a large summer camp, feeding 300+ kids every day for multiple summers.
Spanish: I hold a degree in Education with a concentration in Spanish. I am a fluent speaker, having learned Spanish in school, college, and while living in Bolivia. My husband is Bolivian, so I speak Spanish at least 90% of my day.
