Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner Level
Welcome to a safe space where AAC users can make friends and learn Spanish in a way that works for you! In this engaging interactive class, students will participate in songs, this-or-that activities, matching activities, "I Spy," and more to learn a wide variety of basic Spanish vocabulary sets.

It is important to note that this is not equivalent to or a replacement for speech therapy. Students should already be familiar with using their AAC devices (though specific proficiencies may vary). This is simply a space to learn new Spanish phrases and vocabulary using AAC devices, not to learn to use the device in general.

Instruction will feature AAC pathways/icons to not only teach your child to understand Spanish, but also to use his/her device to communicate. Language will be made comprehensible on my part through gestures and visuals.

Students will demonstrate comprehension through yes/no questions, either/or questions, pointing to vocabulary items and completing a matching game at the end of class.

The class structure will follow the following routine:
- Welcome song
- Warm-up/Icebreaker Game
- Vocabulary review with AAC icons
- Vocabulary comprehension practice with game
- Conversation opportunity using new vocabulary
- Closing song

This class is perfect for absolute beginners or students who want a bit of a refresher. New and recycled vocabulary will be made comprehensible with visuals and gestures each week, so new students can feel free to jump in at any time.

Each month, we will explore a different theme to keep learners engaged. Themes will be updated monthly in this description. Suggestions are always welcome!

For September, we will be reviewing the basics as follows:
Week of September 2: El zoológico/The zoo
Week of September 9: La granja/The farm
Week of September 16: Las mascotas/The pets
Week of September 23: Todos los animales/All the animals

Learning Goals

Students will distinguish between new and familiar Spanish vocabulary sets each week including colors, numbers, letters, farm animals, food items and more.
Students will learn to use their AAC devices to communicate in Spanish

Other Details

Learning Needs
All students are welcome here to come as they are! I have extensive experience working with ADHD, ASD, and social anxiety. I work to foster a warm, supportive learning environment and am happy to accomodate your child's needs.
Parental Guidance
While I am most familiar with Unidad pathways and icons, I ask that families that use other devices please reach out to me prior to the start of class so that we can discuss any differences in your child's individual device needs. Third-party tools (Nearpod and LiveWorksheets) will not be used in class except by me. I will screenshare these games and allow students to participate collectively. After class, I may post the same activity for students to complete on their own as reinforcement of what we've learned. These activities do not require an account and are optional.
Pre-Requisites
This class will be geared towards beginners, however, intermediate students are welcome to help support newer-to-Spanish learners and join in the conversation/fun!
Supply List
I ask that parents please communicate before class starts regarding your child's specific device so that I can personalize instruction as much as possible. For Unidad, I am able to provide a list of icons/pathways. For other devices, we may need to collaborate to discover the specific pathway needed to communicate vocabulary items using a "Search for vocabulary" feature. I am always happy to work with families to ensure that your child has everything s/he needs for success!
