Intermediate - Advanced Level
During this multi-day book club, which will meet over a period of 4 weeks, students will be reading beforehand and discussing among each other the book "James y el melocotón gigante" by Roald Dahl. The goal for this class, is for students to develop reading comprehension and conversational skills in Spanish, while reading a fun and delightful book. This is a small class; therefore, students will be actively speaking during each session. Schedule: Week 1: Read the first nine chapters before class. Each chapter in the book is short; therefore, the number assigned can be comfortably read during a 7-day period. The first week, we will learn more about the author, discuss the first chapters and the character traits of the main characters. We will also do a writing and drawing activity to describe the characters. Week 2: Students are required to read before class the next nine chapters. Once we meet, we will discuss vocabulary and each chapter. During the last 15 minutes, the students will play a reading comprehension game on nearpod.com Week 3: Students are required to read before class nine more chapter. We will focus on discussing the book themes and character development. During the last part of the class, the students will participate on a reading comprehension game. Week 4: This is our last session, students should have finished reading the remaining chapters. We will go over vocabulary questions, discuss the chapters, analyze the ending and finish the class with a reading comprehension game on nearpod.com. Everyone is welcome to post any questions and comments regarding their thoughts about the book, reading comprehension or vocabulary questions; this can be done on the classroom board between classes. I will also be posting regularly writing activities and questions for discussion.
Learning Goals
Students will learn and improve their Spanish vocabulary and grammar, as they will be reading extensively. They will also improve the conversational and writing skills, and develop critical thinking by discussing the book and giving their own opinions about it.
