Beginner Level
This course is for the second semester of Spanish 1 and has a pre-requisite of successful completion of my first semester Spanish 1 or teacher approval. Self-Paced Spanish 1: This is the second half of a year-long Spanish 1 course. The successful completion of this paired with semester 1 will complete a full year of Spanish 1 at the high school level preparing a student to move into Spanish 2 at the end of the school year. It will also prepare a student to speak and understand Spanish at a beginner level. In this Self-Paced version of Spanish 1 all of this is done with no live classes. Students will watch and interact with pre-recorded video lessons and use interactive activities and written work to help them learn and grow in Spanish. What is Spanish 1? Spanish 1 is for the beginner Spanish student and is traditionally offered in year 1 of high school, but a student may begin Spanish 1 whenever they desire to start learning Spanish. There is no prior knowledge of Spanish necessary for this class. Why Self-Paced? This course was created from my live Spanish 1 course. It is my own curriculum designed in such a way to not only complete the Spanish 1 requirements but most importantly to help students grasp the language and begin using it. This asynchronous style course allows a student to complete lessons and activities on their schedule and at their pace. The student does not lose the magic of a live classroom as the video lessons are interactive with verbal prompts, question/answer, and other interactive activities. This class will offer the opportunity for students to interact verbally with me in the security of their own space! Students listen and repeat to practice pronunciation and they respond to questions to practice forming language. The beauty of self-paced also allows students to pause or repeat in order to ensure they have grasped a concept or to gain more practice. While working through each video lesson students are simultaneously working through Nearpod activities to go along with the lesson. I check this work regularly as well as check and engage with the students within the classroom chat feature. This ensures that although a student is taking the course at their pace, they are not alone and will always have me to reach out to with questions or doubts. What will it be like for a student in Self-Paced Spanish 1? Spanish 1 consists of 6 units. Each unit contains 8-9 video lessons. There are approximates 3 vocabulary quizzes in a unit, 1 after each 3 lessons. A student completes each unit with a written unit test and verbal review activities. Most videos contain a special question that students will answer in written from in the classroom chat, in Spanish. I can then engage with them, offer correction, encouragement or continue the conversation to give them even more Spanish practice. Unit breakdown: Weeks 1-3 Unit 7: Expressions with "tener", expression with "por", Irregular "yo" form verbs (poner, salir, ver, traer, caer, conocer, saber, dar) conocer vs saber Weeks 4-6 Unit 8: hay, stem-changing verbs (e-ie), hacer + expressions (talking about weather), por vs para, infinitive phrases (preferir, querer, pensar, poder, necesitar) Weeks 7-9 Unit 9: "uir" verbs, oír, direct objects, future phrase (ir+a+infinitive), llevar + clothing. The total number of hours suggested for this course including the time watching the video-lessons is 2-4 hours. Students will have regular homework in addition to the video lessons which should not take more than 10-15 minutes after the video lesson, if it is assigned. This is an academic course and as such does require a high level of commitment. I am always available to help a student where they need and will always try to flexible or make adjustments for students if needed.
