Planetary Systems
 Week 1
Lesson 1
What are Planetary Systems
For our first SM6 lesson, students will learn all about Planetary Systems. We will first define what a “planetary system” is, and then discuss what it means, and how our planetary system is unique from the others we have found around us in space. Focus will be on understanding the term and how we identify the “planetary systems” in space. (Key Terminology: Star, Orbit, Revolve, Spin, Rotate, Planet, Moons, & Planetary System)
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Our Planetary System
During this lesson students will discover our own unique planetary system, along with its planets, moons, and more. Emphasis will be given on naming and ordering the planets in our Planetary System, as well as discussing the main details for each region or celestial object within our Solar System. (Key Terminology: Solar System, Sol, Planet, Dwarf Planets, Asteroid Belt, Kuiper Belt, & Oort Cl

Galaxies
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Introducing Galaxies
This lesson will begin with a review over Planetary Systems, then we focus on learning what galaxies are, what they look like, how they function, and things we may find inside a galaxy. We will explore the definition of “galaxy”, discussing what galaxies are and how we can explain this concept to others using previously learned terminology.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
The Types of Galaxies
During this lesson, students will discover the main types of galaxies & details about each type. We will look at many examples and students will be given the opportunity to identify these types based on the images shown. (Key Terminology: Galaxy, Spiral, Lenticular, Elliptical, Irregular, & Cluster)
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Wrap-up & Review over Galaxies and Planetary Systems
Today we review Planetary Systems and Galaxies with an exciting, interactive Review Game. Students are encouraged to work with & help their classmates as we review the information learned about Planetary Systems & Galaxies, the types of galaxies, & the definitions of the key vocabulary used during our previous lessons. We will explore the galaxies we have discovered through an amazing video & picture journey!
Unit 3The Universe
3 lessons3 Weeks
The Universe
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Defining the Universe
For this lesson, we will discover how everything we know & have learned about resides within the largest region of space, The Known Universe. We discuss what the Universe is, how scientists believe it all began, as well as what we can find within the Universe. (Key terminology: Big Bang Theory, Planetary System, Galaxy, Universe). Note: As this is a Science class, explanations about creation will focus on scientific theory with an emphasis made that these are just scientists' best guess.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Mysteries in the Known Universe
This lesson is full of fun as we discuss some of the greatest mysteries in the Known Universe. Students will be introduced to the concepts of dark matter, dark energy, black holes, cosmic rays, and even the possibility of a Multiverse. This class is sure to leave your little scientists’ eyes wide with wonderment & amazement as we have an open discussion about all of these mysterious subjects, and the possibility of life out there (be it microscopic or intelligent or beyond imagination)!
 Week 8
Lesson 8
The Multiverse & Review
We end our course with a lesson wrapping up our class discussion of the Multiverse and Space Mysteries, discussing what we would have in our own version of the Multiverse. Then we will play a fun, interactive Review Game, summarizing all we have learned & discovered about the Universe, Galaxies, & Planetary Systems. This is one exciting way to end our SM6 class!
Students will be able to identify the differences between Planetary Systems, Galaxies, and the Universe. The learner will be able to name the Types of Galaxies, and explore the mysteries of the Universe, while learning how to appreciate the thoughts and opinions of their fellow classmates during our class discussions.
I have always had a love of space, from the moment my grandpa, an amateur astronomer, let me look through the 10-foot telescope he built all by himself, to watching shuttles & satellites lift into the sky, and watching some fall back to the earth. I have spotted some of the largest dust storms to hit Mars, and have enjoyed looking at the various craters on our Moon and seeing the rings around Saturn, all from my own backyard in Missouri & while using other telescopes my grandpa built. I have never ceased my exploration and search, looking to the skies to watch for eclipses, comets, and so much more! My love of all things Space has only increased with time, and I feel it is the next great wave of the future! As a teacher with a Master’s Degree in Teaching & over 30 years of experience working with children of various ages, and more than 5 years teaching students about Space, as well as other Science-related subject-matter, I love sharing my knowledge with the next generation. My hope is to instill the awe-inspiring beauty the Unknown Universe holds, as well as encourage students to dream and believe! I hope to see you in class as we take to the Cosmos during this Amazing Space Mission!

Assessments Offered
There is no formal assessment for this course, however, the teacher will utilize a variety of methods to determine that learning has occurred; including, online polls, game-type reviews & other activities, as well as in-class review questions, and more, all in an interactive, fun, encouraging manner.
Grades Offered
Any learning materials needed will be available for download in the Outschool classroom.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Each learner will need their cameras turned on for this class. Parents may need to assist their child in learning how to "mute & unmute" themselves, as teacher will mute students at times during the "teaching" portion of our class & then ask them to "unmute" to answer questions & interact with the other learners during the interactive, conversational, and review portion of our class. This allows each learner the opportunity to hear what is taught, while still allowing for questions, interaction and such.
Youtube video clips may be used to help learners understand the material at time. All links to these videos will be available in the Outschool Classroom after our lesson.
