Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Day 1: Are you ready to meet the coolest solar system around? You'll learn which planet has the largest mountain and which smells like rotten eggs! Did you know two planets actually rain diamonds and another is so light it would float in your bathtub? In this one time class we'll answer these questions and more! We'll read There’s No Place Like Space! (Cat in the Hat book), learn the planet song, and do a craft. Be sure to print the class materials.

Day 2: First, by comparing planets to non-planetary objects students will discover the three rules of what makes a planet. Next, they will be introduced to the five dwarf planets in our solar system through the story, "Pluto Visits Earth" and a craft about my favorite dwarf planet, Pluto! See the supply list for the materials needed.

Day 3: First, we'll learn what a volcano is and how it works. Next, we'll discuss how they are different from cryovolcanoes, which erupts water, ammonia or methane, instead of molten rock. We'll look at where cryovolcanoes are found and how scientists discovered them. We'll do an experiment using white playdoh, vinegar, baking soda, and blue food coloring to make our very own cryovolcanoes. Finally, we'll paint Plutonian cryovolcanoes on black paper with white and yellow paint.

Hi! I’m Alayna, a University of Washington alum, certificated teacher, and local author. Before having my two adorable munchkins, I taught in the public-school system for almost 6 years, and now enjoy guiding my children on their learning adventures. Since kids learn in many different ways, I love to utilize a variety of strategies such as think-pair-share, class discussions, games, and crafts. But above all I believe strongly that learning should be fun for as George Dorsey said, “Play is the beginning of knowledge.”
