Homework
1 hour per week. Students will work independently to build words from each matrix. I will always give feedback on any work that is posted and am happy to answer questions if they have them.

Class Experience

***ESL friendly! This class is a wonderful way to build English language vocabulary!***

This is a Self-Paced class so your learner will be able to work through the material at your own pace. I will always respond to any questions and give feedback on all work posted.

This class will help develop in your learner:

1. A fundamental understanding of how English spelling works
2. The impact of prefixes on the meaning of a base (do, redo)
3. The possible spelling impacts of adding suffixes to the base, such as when to drop a silent e or when to double a final consonant
4. How the meaning of the base carries over into the meanings of the new words that are built from it (sign/signing/signed/signal/signature)
5. An understanding that spelling patterns and meaning are retained even when pronunciation shifts after adding a suffix (act/action, heal/healthy)
6. A deep understanding of word families that are linked by common bases
7. An understanding that suffixes can affect a word's part of speech and usage in a sentence.
8. An understanding that English spelling communicates meaning as well as sound, and that letters can serve functions in words other than creating a sound
9. The difference between a bound base and a free base

Free Bases we will study in this class:
do, help, busy, please, family

Bound Bases we will study in this class:
stude, rupt, sect, clude, hap

Syllabus

3 Lessons
over 3 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Introduction
A video lesson will explain how to use a matrix to build words with a base by adding prefixes and suffixes. I'll also talk about what kinds of spelling changes you might need to watch out for as you add suffixes, and about how words can change as we add prefixes and suffixes to a base. A simple matrix will be posted that your learner can use to get started trying to build some words. There will also be videos posted on the three suffixing conventions if learners need extra help.
Lesson 2:
Free Bases
This lesson will give learners five "free" bases to build words from and to practice applying the spelling changes that can happen when adding a suffix to a base, with a particular focus on dropping a single, silent e and changing a y to an i. There is no video for this lesson, only work for learners to complete on their own.
Lesson 3:
Bound Bases
In this lesson, learners will get five "bound" bases to build words from. We'll again think about spelling changes that may happen when adding a suffix, in particular when to double a final consonant. There is no video for this lesson, only work for learners to complete on their own.
