Class Experience

This course is a 4-day camp that guides your teenager into the world of yoga. Your teen will be taught yoga postures, participate in mindfulness activities, learn how to meditate and begin to understand how the breath can help decrease anxiety. This course is built to promote stress relief, improve flexibility and increase strength while increasing self-confidence and body awareness.

Day 1: We will cover the meaning of yoga, meditation, and pranayama (breath control). Your teen will learn how and why we meditate, why breath control is essential, and be introduced to sun salutations (a specific set of yoga postures that flow from one to the next). They will explore at least one balance pose and participate in a mindfulness activity. Each class will begin slow, increase in momentum then slow back down to allow for a period of deep relaxation (savasana). Finally, your learner will be given the opportunity to share and discuss with their classmates and then the class will be dismissed.

Day 2: We will continue to discuss how having a yoga practice can be good for the body. Your teen will learn new poses beyond the sun salutation introduced on day 1, they will learn another balancing pose, and participate in a yoga activity to promote self-confidence and mindfulness. We will continue the discussion on meditation. They will participate in savasana and before closing the class they will be given the opportunity to share any thoughts, and feelings, and ask questions.

Day 3: We will review what was taught during days 1-2 and build upon that. Your teen will learn about keeping a journal and why it can be helpful. They will then participate in writing a journal entry in their own journal or on a piece of paper. They will be taught additional poses as well as a second yoga flow known as the Sun Salutation B. Towards the end of class they will be asked if they would like to create a yoga flow (pose combination) to demonstrate during our final class together. Lastly, your child will be guided into savasana.

Day 4: On this final day, your teen will be given a journal prompt to write about in their journals and practice both Sun Salutations they learned during the week. They will also be asked if they would like to share a flow they have created. They will enjoy a fun yoga-based activity and then be guided into the last savasana of this series. Before closing the class they will have the opportunity to share their thoughts about anything learned during camp and any questions they have will be answered at this time.

*All students will be encouraged to fully participate in discussions and activities however they can "pass" should they not feel comfortable.
Learning Goals
Student's should finish this 4 day camp with a better understanding of the true meaning of yoga. They will have been taught strategies to use when feeling anxious or upset. If your teen spends time outside of class practicing yoga postures (poses), by the end of this course they should also have improved flexibility and increased their strength. My hope is your child enjoys the course and uses what they have learned to better their life.
