Do you write music and want to play it for someone? We meet every week to play our music and support and inspire each other. Find strategies to keep writing and ask for feedback on songs you struggle to complete. We are here to help!

Class Experience

  • Students will learn how to give encouraging feedback, present their original works of music and learn from each other!
I have a BMus from McGill, a diploma from Grant McEwan and many years lived experience as a musician. I write songs and perform in a wide range of styles. Thanks :) Yvonne

Details: Learners will need to bring original music to the class to perform for each other. Due to copyright restrictions, it's important that students understand they can not play other people's music in the group. It takes time to complete a piece of music so I understand they can't bring a song a week. Learners can come to every group meeting to support each other or just to present what part of the song they do have and ask for ideas on how to keep going from the group.
Instrument to accompany. It's tricky singing loudly into a headset or microphone as Zoom has a tendency to cut out. We will just have to work out the optimal set up as we go.
Please remember that these are teenagers writing songs. There may be language warnings and what might be deemed as inappropriate content for some. I will ask each learner to tone down their compositions and to warn the group if the content contains sexual references, offensive language or violent imagery. I would prefer that it doesn't but sometimes songs can be quite emotionally powerful or triggering so please check in with your learner after class.

Also, reminder to set your audio settings in zoom to be the Audio setting Original Sound for Musicians should be selected and then when in class, remember to select it at the top to be ON (this removes noise suppression and allows me to hear your instrument as well as your voice (as well as all your background noise so you need to be in a quiet room).
*This course directly relates to Music Grades 5-12 in the B.C. Ministry of Education's Curricular Core Competencies in particular: Music Theory, Creative Process, Performer/Audience roles, music history, music ethics, technology and vocal technique.
