This in-depth, hands-on 4-day camp explores an easy song-writing process for young beginner musicians of any instrument. Students will learn how to create melodies by inventing and manipulating motives. Next, we will talk about some different ways to develop a theme and how to use song forms to build a larger song. The class is structured so that the majority of the learning happens with discussion and hands-on work. Students will be need to be willing to share their work and discuss it with me and their fellow classmates. Students will also be given homework to practice and expand upon the concepts that we discuss in class. Written homework assignments will be due before class each week so that I can provide feedback and guidance. Pre-requisites: This class is not limited by instruments or genres. The concepts we will work on can be used in any kind of song! This class is geared towards beginner song-writing students who can: * Understand and read basic rhythm (whole notes/rests, half notes/rests, quarter notes/rests, eighth notes/rest, dotted quarter notes/rests, and dotted half notes/rests) * Be able to name the notes on their instrument of choice (Letter names like C-D-E or Solfege like Do Re Mi are OK.) *** Students do NOT need to be able to fully read understand sheet music to take this class. *** Class Structure: Day 1 Overview of Scales in Song-writing Introduction to making unique motives, a repeated bit of music to hold the song together Lyrics & Rhythms Call & Response Form Day 2 Motive Manipulation & Transformation: Repetition ABA Form Day 3 Motive Manipulation & Transformation: Sequence and Retrograde AABB Form Day 4 Combining Motive Variations AABA Form * Note: This class is designed for 2 or more learners and may be rescheduled without at least 2 learners enrolled 72 hours (3 days) before the class begins. * #creative

Supply List
Students will need to have their instrument with them as they log into Zoom. Please print out the worksheets provided or have your learner copy them by hand before class; this will help them write their song easier and faster during class time.
