1 hour per week. Practice is provided to learners after each new topic is introduced. The practiced includes detailed answer keys for self-checking. Additionally, we will have about 5 minutes near the beginning of the following session for questions that came up while completing the practice. I'm available to answer questions by Outschool message between classes. I don't check or grade the homework individually.Assessment
Optional Google forms quizzes are provided at checkpoints during the class. These are self-checking. The scores do not come to me. The learner is able to see what the score is and what problems were missed along with the correct answers.Class Experience
US Grade 9 - 11
Beginner Level
Solving quadratics is widely considered the most difficult unit in Algebra 1. My goal is to make it accessible for students who really struggle with math. Topics covered include the following: Session 1-Finding the discriminant and understanding its meaning Session 2 & 3-Quadratic Formula Session 4, 5, & 6-Factoring (also called factorising) Session 7-Taking square roots Session 8-Completing the square Session 9-Knowing when to use each method; mixed review I use scaffolded instruction, which simply means that I provide more support at the beginning and gradually learners work more and more independently with each new problem. I provide guidance and feedback throughout each session. Learners will be provided with a reference sheet for every lesson. Additionally, students will receive practice problems (with detailed answer keys) for every topic. We'll have some time to go over specific practice questions near the beginning of the next session. I'm a high school math teacher with a master’s degree in Education, and I specialize in working with students who struggle with math. Questions? Always feel free to message me here on Outschool.
Learning Goals
Learners will gain a deeper understanding of solving quadratics, particularly factoring, using the quadratic formula, completing the square, and taking square roots.
Other Details
Pre-Requisites
No prior knowledge of solving quadratics required. Learners should be able to find the greatest common factor of a trinomial prior to taking this class. If your learner needs help with this, message me to schedule a tutoring pre-session.
Supply List
Students are required to bring a pencil and notebook paper (or write on a tablet/ipad). Additionally, students are required to have a scientific calculator during our sessions that is not the standard phone calculator. I highly recommend the TI 30XS Multiview for its use of square roots. Message me if you'd like a link to order it from Amazon (approximately $20). Students will need to download and/or print the provided pdf's I will share throughout the class.

Is your learner failing math?
Does your teen say things like…
I can’t do math!
I’ll never get this.
I’m going to fail this math class!
I’m so dumb.
Well, you’re in the right place.
HI! I’m Mary Kennedy, certified math teacher, and I love working with students who struggle with high school math and doubt that they can do it.
I've taught Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 and have more than 20 years of teaching experience. My Master's degree is in Learning Disabilities.
In my classes, students connect their learning to critical thinking skills (includes reasoning, analysis, and perseverance) and growth mindset (“I haven’t learned this YET.”).
I strive to make the math concepts accessible to struggling learners.
Help your teen regain confidence and learn the skills they need to pass Algebra.
Don’t let math continue to disrupt your family’s life.
About Mrs. K.
I do life in a tiny tourist town with my husband and three kids (when they're home from college).
Twice, my family has had the unique and wonderful experience of hosting students from Southeast Asia in our home and community. We have maintained friendships with these students and their families for several years now through technology, despite our geographic distance.
I love working with students from every country and encourage their language skills in my math classes.
