Want to conquer math word problems? This is the strategy for you! This strategy breaks down any word problem with clear steps to help you be successful and feel confident! This strategy is called, "UPS Check." For any word problem students will learn how to understand the problem, plan what to do for the problem, solve the problem, and check their work. Each session will have different themed word problems to keep learners engaged and see a real world connection! For each lesson, I will model an example, guide the class through a different example, and then have students try independently. Class 1: The first step of this procedure is, "Understand." With this steps students have a systematic way to understand any word problem. Class 2: The next is to, "Plan." This step helps students plan how to solve the problem and estimate their answer so they know what they are looking for. Class 3: The third step is, "Solve." Here students will solve the problem using a strategy that works best for them. Class 4: The final step is, "Check." This step helps students check their answer is correct by using a different strategy, evaluate that their strategy makes sense, and write their answer correctly. Students need number sense and a basic understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
