One of the most important skills for a student is the ability to communicate effectively, clearly, and with confidence, whether speaking in front of the class or simply talking with a friend. The goal for this class is to encourage students who may struggle in social situations to see becoming more assertive as a skill set that anyone can develop or improve with consistent practice. I offer practical and easy-to-understand strategies allowing the student to ease into a more comfortable approach when engaging in conversation with others. Further, I encourage a class environment that is supportive and affirming, not tethered by pressure or expectation. This class is packed with information, including tips and tricks a student may copy and keep for future reference. This class is ideal for students who may struggle in social situations, are reluctant to speak to or with others, and/or lack confidence in meeting new people. I strive to help students realize their potential in a positive and constructive manner, allowing them to recognize their accomplishments and learn from past experiences. I am happy to work with students with communication challenges, shyness, and social anxiety. For a more comprehensive experience, please consider my 3-day class, "Assertiveness, Self-Confidence, and Social Skills Workshop". As this is an inclusive workshop, all students are welcome. If your student has special abilities or requires accommodations, please let me know.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree from University of South Carolina
I am a former therapist who has worked with children, adolescents, and teenagers in individual and group therapy settings. I began my mental health career employed with a psychiatric hospital before I left to counsel children and their families in a nonprofit community-based program. I then became the on-site Director of an Independent Living Program which assisted teenagers and young adults transitioning into independence. Along with counseling, we provided training for healthy coping skills, assertiveness, and social skills. As someone who has struggled with shyness and feeling awkward in social situations since childhood, I can relate to others who find social situations stressful or attempt to avoid approaching new people or situations. I try to teach students the value of believing in themselves while connecting with others and being a part of a community.
