Class Experience

This course will teach teens how to read social cues, greet, initiate/maintain conversations, identify expected/unexpected behaviors, make friends, and more. Students and teacher will be able to interact via discussion posts on the classroom page. Extensive research on the effects of social skills instruction on teens with these challenges shows that social skills instructional programs are effective in reducing experiences of school failure or rejection as well as the aggressiveness and isolation that often develop because of problems relating to others. Four posts with question prompts are included, along with resources such as videos and PDFs.

The curriculum is as follows:
1. Greetings, initiating a conversation, and maintaining a conversation
2. Verbal/nonverbal social cues (e.g., facial expressions, body language)
3. Expected versus unexpected behaviors, using our social filter
4. Conflict resolution, identifying qualities in a good friend
