If ever the adage ‘show not tell’ was applicable, then it must be to a Halloween story. The emphasis on this class is to enjoy creating a story full of atmosphere and suspense. With a strict ‘no gore/ violence’ rule, learners will discover how much more satisfying and effective it is to create an air of mystery and, perhaps, even include humour for a successful spooky story. Learners will explore how to plan out a story and use descriptive writing effectively, as well as technical aspects such as punctuation, sentence length and pacing to build tension. We will discuss how giving a reader hints, and a ‘taste’ of what’s happening is often far more effective than a direct ‘telling’ of an event. Time permitting, we may share how to effectively read a spooky tale aloud for maximum impact!
Learning Goals

Planning techniques in creating a story
Descriptive techniques

Paragraph planning and structure
How to change the pace using these techniques.

Parental Guidance
Although there is a strict no violent or gory content policy to the class and discussion will be guided away from any age-inappropriate matter, and towards light ‘spooky’ and not ‘horror’ content, please be aware sensitive learners may not enjoy focusing on creating a ‘Halloween’ mood in discussions.

Notebook or paper to take notes and write the story on. Pen/ pencil.

Writing is my passion and as well as majoring in English at university, I've almost 20 years’ experience in teaching English in primary schools (4-11-year-olds). Over those years I have worked regularly with groups of children specifically on English writing skills.
