Class Experience

Over 4 week, students will learn some of the conventions of poetry, and begin to build up their own portfolio of poetry.

In week 1, we will look at some poetry, and pick out the techniques and styles used, and the effect that these have. We will attempt to use some of these techniques and styles in our own work. We will gather ideas for our own poetry themes, and look at how to take these ideas and turn them into poetry.

In week 2, we will share a poem we have written, and discuss what is effective about it, and ways to improve it. We will then look at two specific poetry forms, and attempt writing poetry using these forms. We will continue working with our chose theme, and develop an understanding of further poetic conventions.

By week 3, we will have written at least 5 poems, and will continue editing these, and looking at ways to improve them. Again, we will read a published poem, and discuss its merits. We will look at more poetic conventions, and ways in which we can apply these to our own poetry.

In the final week, students will have the opportunity to select their key poem from their collection, and have this critiqued by the other students. Students will learn how to critique respectfully, and to understand the benefits of a good critique. I will be sharing some of my poetry and encouraging students to critique it.

By the end of the course, students will have written a collection of poems on a theme of their choice, and will hopefully continue on to write more poems, using more themes, and develop themselves as a poet.
Learning Goals
Students will create a collection of 5-10 poems on a theme of their choice.

I'm a qualified teacher, experienced in teaching English, History, Music, and Art. I home educated my two children, who are now at university, and I have taught in mainstream schools, and in Special-Ed schools.

I have also taught piano, guitar, singing, and music theory, taking students through grade examinations.

I am experienced in teaching the British GCSEs, and through home-schooling, I taught my own children using American curriculum. I teach Language Arts, English Literature and Language, Creative Writing, Poetry - both writing, and reading, and many other fantastic and interesting topics.

I teach writing skills using the Writing Revolution techniques, and have seen students improve their writing skills rapidly using some of the techniques applied.

In addition, I worked as a graphic designer for 10 years, working from home, and offer graphic design and video editing classes, using Adobe Creative Suite, DaVinci Resolve, and soon, Affinity creative suite.

Growth Mindset is very important in my classes, and I encourage it in all learners - Growth Mindset is the belief that even if you can't do something or don't understand something, then you CAN learn how to do it or understand it. Growth Mindset says "I can't do it YET, but I can learn." Learning happens through making mistakes, and then modifying your approach, changing what you do, to improve. I encourage all learners to try, and to feel comfortable making mistakes, because that's how we all learn.
