The class is structured in two parts of which each part is offered sequentially over two weeks. Part 1 of the class will focus on what are cancer cells and how are they different from normal cells in plant and animal cells. We will review the cell cycle, checkpoints, and how problems may occur during the cell cycle. Part 2 of the class will focus on how problems develop in the cell cycle and how does the cell try to repair a cell when cancer cells are found. The teaching style is a...
To ensure effective tutoring, the teacher suggests meeting 2x per week. Book additional recurring meetings after the initial purchase.
- Students will learn: 1) what are the major parts of the cell that play a part in the cell cycle in plant and animal cells 2) differences between germ and somatic cells 3) phases of the cell cycle 4) stages of mitosis 5) definition of checkpoints and how they work 6) the definition of a mutation and what role does it play in the development of cancer cells 7) the types of repair mechanisms that cells contain to repair problems in the cell cycle
Academic background - PhD in Molecular Biosciences (Emphasis on metabolic disease and disorders) Postdoctoral fellowship - Mayo Clinic Rochester (Endocrinology and Metabolic Disease) Teaching Experience - 15 years Higher Education Teaching Experience in the following courses (Neuroscience, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, General Biology, Pharmacology, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Bioinformatics)
Students should have a general understanding of what is a cell and the parts of a cell.
Handouts that will be completed during each session that will be provided at sign-up. Suggested supplies: notebook paper for notetaking, colored pencils to study the steps of the cell cycle
