Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Welcome to our Montessori inspired virtual classroom where we learn life skills and age appropriate curriculum together while having fun. The Friendship Haven classroom is positive, welcoming and social. Lessons will always be hands-on and interactive. My goal is to foster a love of reading in your child's life while helping them improve their literacy skills.

Students learn to read at all different rates and many times their age doesn’t match a grade level chart. These groups are based solely on the skill level of your child and what they need! I recommend taking a short 1 on 1 session to assess your child’s skill level before signing up for a certain reading section. This will ensure your child is getting the lessons they need to move them along their reading journey. You can send us a private message to register for a private 1:1 assessment lesson.

Each will begin with practicing sight words used at your learner's level. We will then read a story that often contains these words. The story may also be chosen to practice a certain skill we are working on. After the story students will be asked comprehension questions to check for understanding. We will practice a phonics spelling pattern before saying goodbye.

Please note, online books will be used during class, so there is no need to purchase anything.

Each week our book will follow a specific theme:

Week of September 11: Pets
Week of September 18: Playground Fun
Week of September 25: Sports
Week of October 4: Autumn

Welcome Families,
My name is Ms. Hillier. I am an Elementary teacher living in Canada. I taught in the public system for six years and my experience is in lower Elementary classrooms. I also have been teaching online for two years. In addition to teaching, I have been running the youngest branch of Girl Guides in my area for the last twelve years.
Over the years I have met so many lovely students, but something was missing in my classrooms. The public system is built around the "average" child. One who learns at a level that matches their age. What about the students who are at a lower level then considered the average? Or higher? The current system in my opinion, isn't giving them what they deserve! The lower students are pushed through. Not really feeling like they are good enough! The students at a higher level are given twenty worksheets and are often bored. It made me feel defeated year after year!
I decided to find a new way to teach children. One where every child could feel successful and work at their own level. This dream for something different lead me to obtaining a diploma in Lower Elementary Montessori Teaching.
A school system where students love learning, laugh, and be silly, to grow, explore and be their very best! There are no average students, so I don't want to teach in an average school!
I decided to teach on Outschool for just this reason! Online I am able to teach a child the skills they need and what interests them. Instead of what the province says a 7 year old should be doing to be successful. Every child is unique and special, who learns in their own way! This is how I want to teach my programs.
I can't wait to meet your child and watch them shine!
Thank you for your interest in my classes.
-Ms. H
