In this one-time class, students will learn how to sketch landscapes and architecture. Most importantly, students will have a ton of fun drawing and be encouraged to be creative! Together, we will draw images with pen and marker using Google Street View. Students will be able to take the skills they learn and apply them to outdoor, on-site drawings in the future. Students will need a sketchbook, a pen with waterproof ink, and preferably at least one high quality art-marker. Students of all drawing levels are welcome! - First 5 minutes - Introduction Introduction to drawing tools and how to use them. 5 Minutes - Warm Up! Rough sketches based on the lessons we learned in the first part of class. 30 Minutes - Sketch Time! Sketching 1-3 locations using Google Street View. The locations will be preselected by me and geared towards teaching drawing fundamentals. Locations are never repeated. Final 5 minutes - Wrap up Final questions and an optional opportunity to share work. - *Class Structure: During the sketch portion of class, students will be drawing the location I provide. I will be drawing the scene alongside the students and allow them to watch while they work. I will talk through the decisions I am making in real time. The students can choose to mimic my approach to the drawing or draw at their own pace! I will offer guidance to each individual student on their drawing. I may pause class occasionally to show a quick 2-3 minute drawing demo. Every student will get at least several minutes of one-on-one time with me to discuss their drawing and get encouragement or ideas. I am 100% about drawing being fun! I aim to be encouraging, not dismissive or critical of the student's work.
Students will gain information about how to compose a sketch quickly and effectively. They will also become more comfortable with their drawing supplies. Most importantly, they will have fun drawing and want to do it more! I will consider the class a success if the students are inspired to continue developing their drawing skills. This class can be completed with just a pen and paper! But to get the most out of it I recommend purchasing the following supplies. You will receive links to purchase all of these products in your Welcome email when you register. Hello! Ready to get drawing? I am so excited to teach students about drawing, painting, and illustration!
I've been a full-time illustrator for seven years. During that time I have illustrated eight picture-books for children of all ages and created illustrations for clients such as: The New York Times, Google Translate, BMW, Uber, Amazon, and many more! I host in-person figure drawing sessions here in Seattle along with an outdoor drawing club. I make it a priority to draw every day!
I am a firm believer that drawing is a muscle that can be improved, not an innate skill you either have or don't have. By the time kids become young adults they either think of themselves as "good" or "bad" at drawing. But it's an unreasonable expectation that anyone would be good at drawing without practice and a strong foundation. Would we expect someone to be instantly an expert in math or science without studying it?
Oftentimes, we put way too much focus on trying to attain realism in art. In reality, there are few professional applications for photo-realistic drawing. And I believe that imaginative, stylized artwork is more fun to create. I want to teach students how to find their own personal style and most importantly have fun when they draw! If a student is having fun, they are much more likely to build a life-long artistic practice.
When I'm not drawing I love to go on snow-shoeing, ride my motorcycle, and play with my dog, Dziga. I'm so excited to draw with you!
