Skeleton Hands with Fall Flowers

In this one-time live class we'll create a mysterious fall-themed artwork with pencils and watercolors. We'll trace our hands and loosely paint the bones inside. We'll turn those bones into tree branches and add birds, leaves, and flowers.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this class we'll create a work of art inspired by the mystery and beauty of the fall season. We'll look at how skeletons have been used in art and discuss what happens to nature in fall. Then I'll guide the students step-by-step through making their artwork on a piece of watercolor paper. First we'll trace our hands with pencils, then go over the pencil lines with brown or black colored pencils. We'll loosely draw the shapes of the bones inside the hands. Then we'll begin painting in the bones of the hands and extend them out of the fingertips into tree branches. We'll paint leaves, birds, and flowers to finish up our painting. After the class, when their artwork is dry the student can add more definition with their colored pencils.

Parental Guidance
We'll briefly look at how skeletons are used in art to represent our humanity but not in a scary way. We'll discuss how skeletons are used in the cultural holiday of Day of the Dead in Mexico and Latin America. But we'll focus on how the holiday is celebration of life.
