Class Experience

This class will give students a hands on approach to voice lessons with a mix of vocal techniques and practicing songs.

Week 1- Breathing Techniques, Articulation Exercises, and Tone Quality- One of the foundations of singing is having proper breath support and shaping vowels properly while singing and speaking.
Students will also be given a beginning vocal exercise to improve pitch and tone quality.

Week 2- Learning about the vocal chords and how they work while singing, and working through chest voice and head voice registers
Students will be given a vocal exercise to work on to develop some strength while singing in both registers.
Vocal Range Classification

Week 3- Vocal Exercises and Musical Theater song - Students will learn some vocal exercises and choose a song to work on from the Musical Theater genre.

Week 4- Students will perform their first song selections while demonstrating the techniques they have learned so far. Teacher will provide feedback on improvements that can be made.

Week 5- Strength Building Vocal Exercises and Lip Buzzes - Students will be working on ways to improve their stamina on challenging notes that are often hard to reach. We will discuss ways to release tension when reaching for those seemingly elusive notes.

Week 6- Choosing a song from the Pop or Jazz Genre and how to sing them - We will choose a new song from a different genre and work on how to properly sing them with techniques that have been covered in previous weeks.

Week 7- Students will perform their songs for the class, and the teacher will provide feedback and give suggestions on improvement.

Week 8- Review Breathing Exercises, Articulation Exercises, Tone Quality, Pitch Control, and Range - We will be focusing again on student’s ranges and how to continue to build vocal range with existing exercises. If time permits, we may also work on a new exercise.

Week 9- Choosing a new song from the Classical or Traditional genre - Students will choose a more traditional song selection to learn the proper way to sing this style. These songs could be spirituals or older pieces from before 1900. Even some musical songs will fit into this category.

Week 10- Performances of traditional songs and feedback from teacher on improvements
Review of all elements that were covered in the class.

Here is a video for students to watch that shows how the vocal cords work. It does show the inside of the vocal cords, so let me know if your child is a little squeamish. I will be showing this video in class, but please preview it and watch it with your child. I find it very fascinating how our voices work! This is a great opportunity to see our instrument up close. https://youtu.be/P2pLJfWUjc8

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been performing for over 30 years as a soloist or within a group. I began teaching in 2006, and I focus on performance based lessons. My teaching curriculum fuses contemporary methods with classical elements for well rounded vocal techniques.
One of my favorite performances was on the Grand Ole Opry Stage when I was 19.
