Class Experience

Beginner Level
In Sightreading Made Simple, students will get a quick introduction to the basics of identifying notes on the treble and bass clefs. We will identify the G-line (Treble Clef) and the F-line (Bass Clef) as well as what Middle C looks like on both the treble and bass clefs. Then, I will teach the basics of a "game" called MusicTalks. Students will look at a note on the screen and give a thumbs up if they are ready to identify it. When called on, students will say, "I think this is <the name of the note> because <the evidence for their decision>." When they're finished, I'll ask, "Does anyone agree with this student?" Students can raise their hands if they agree. Then, I will ask, "Does anyone disagree with this student?" Students can raise their hands if they disagree.

If students disagree with the student, I will ask, "Why do you disagree with this student?" The student will then tell their answer and defend their position with evidence. Once everyone has had a chance to share strategies for figuring out which note they're identifying, then I will step in and reveal the answer.

Learning Goals

Students will be able to identify five notes on the treble clef, ascending from middle C (C-D-E-F-G). Students will be able to identify five notes on the bass clef, descending from middle C (C-B-A-G-F). Students will be able to explain their reasoning. Students will practice respectful disagreement based on their reasoning.
