Class Experience

This ongoing class will help your young astronaut learn new sight words each week to develop their independent reading skills. Each class will incorporate opportunities to practice sight words through movement, songs, games, and hands-on activities that make words stick. Weekly sessions will be highly interactive while keeping students engaged in a small-group setting with peers. In order to benefit from this course, learners should already be able to recognize and name the letters of the alphabet.

This class will incorporate an optional worksheet each week. A blank piece of paper or white board can do if you do if you're unable to print. Learners will be provided with optional practice materials after each class to continue their learning.

Sight words (also referred to as high-frequency words) are a crucial component of any readers literacy skills. These words appear frequently in texts, but are irregular and can't easily be sounded out. By learning to recognize these words quickly (at first sight) learners improve their reading fluency and free up their brainpower to decode other words within a text.

This ongoing course will help learners complete Mission Venus, the second in a series of missions to planets in our solar system (see below). Mission Venus blasts through the second 20 words on the Fry word list. Class each week will explicitly teach 2-3 words.

Upcoming classes include-
Week of Nov 1- words, not
Week of Nov 8- what, when
Week of Nov 15- all, were, we
Week of Nov 22- your, can, said
Week of Nov 29- No Class
Week of Dec 6- at, be
Week of Dec 13- No Class
Week of Dec 20- No Class
Week of Dec 29- No Class
Week of Jan 3- this, have, from
Week of Jan 10- or, one
Week of Jan 17- had, by, but

Once your learner accomplishes Mission Venus (mastering Fry's second 20 words), they may choose to join one of the following ongoing sight-word classes in order to complete Fry's first 100 words.

Mission Mars- there, use, an, each, which, she, do, how, their, if, will, up, other, about, out, many, then, them, these, so

Mission Jupiter- some, her, would, make, like, him, into, time, has, look, two, more, write, go, see, number, no, way, could, people

Mission Saturn- my, than, first, water, been, called, who, oil, sit, now, find, long, down, day, did, get, come, made, may, part

Please note, Mission Mercury covers Fry's first 20 words. You may choose to start here depending on your learner's current sight word knowledge.

I am happy to help you in assessing your learner's sight word knowledge to determine the best fit.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I’m Caity, mom of two girls (ages 3 and 1), a once avid runner, aspiring chef, and reading specialist. Here on Outschool, I help beginning readers and their families develop literacy skills, so that they can enjoy the process of becoming confident life-long readers. My classes are student-centered, highly interactive, and blend students’ interests with evidence-based practices. I want to see your learner thrive and have some fun along the way!

I have 10 years of experience as an elementary educator, hold a master’s in literacy instruction, and teaching licenses as a K-6 teacher and reading specialist. Since stepping out of the classroom to stay home with my children, I’ve spent time working with individuals and small groups. I enjoy the opportunity these settings provide to create theme-based instruction that works on core reading skills. My classes for 4-7 year-olds are thoughtfully developed to include engagement, ways for each type of learner to connect, effective instruction on the targeted skill, and fun.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know more about me and my teaching. Please get in touch if you have questions about which classes are the best fit for your child’s goals. No matter where your preschool, kindergarten or 1st-grade child may be in their foundational literacy skill development, I would love to be a part of their journey!
