US Grade 1
Reading is a fundamental part of our every day lives, so it's important for children to become fluent readers. Part of reading fluently is being able to recognize sight words quickly and easily. This one time class is both fun and engaging as children learn seven sight words from the Dolch first grade list. In this fun and engaging class your child will learn sight words (when, walk, them, after, had, some, think). We will practice reading, spelling, and writing the words through games, fluency practice, and reading a short reader. I believe in an "I do, we do, you do" approach where I scaffold students to become more confident and independent as they learn. We will begin by repeating the words as I read them. Together we will play games as we read, write, and spell the words. Students will begin to read independently as we practice fluency and read a short reader. Students will need paper and pencil or a whiteboard and marker (something to write the words on).
Learning Goals
Students will be able to read seven words from the first grade Dolch list (when, walk, them, after, had, some , think).

Supply List
Students will need something to write the words on. My favorite is a whiteboard and eraser; but, a piece of paper and pen/pencil works great too!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Jenilee and I LOVE teaching! I have made it my goal to understand how all kids learn and how they learn best. I have two Bachelor's Degrees (Elementary Education and Special Education-Learning and Behavior Disorders). I also have a Master's Degree with a specialty in Autism Spectrum Disorders. I taught for one year as a third grade teacher and the following three years as a Special Education/Response to Intervention teacher where I used Orton Gillingham to help students thrive. I've spent the past seven years homeschooling my own children. I've also taught ESL online. I love teaching reading, from the basics of reading to book clubs. I enjoy teaching writing, grammar, and American History as well. Education is the building block for the rest of our children's lives. I believe in making learning fun, engaging, and meaningful! In my free time , I enjoy spending time with my family, hiking, gardening, and cooking. I'm excited to see your children in class soon!
