In this ongoing course, students will explore short stories from a diverse mix of authors. Each week, students will preview vocabulary from a short story, followed by a mini lesson on a literary element. Afterwards, they will read the short story and participate in guided discussions and activities that focus on the literary element of the week. All links and materials will be shared through the Outschool platform. 1. Week of 1/10-1/13: "Raymond's Run" by Toni Cade Bambara (character development) 2. Week of 1/17-1/20: "The Treasure of Lemon Brown" by Walter Dean Myers (plot) 3. Week of 1/24-1/27: "All Summer In A Day" by Ray Bradbury (setting) 4. Week of 1/31-2/3: "Eleven" by Sandra Cisneros (figurative language) 5. Week of 2/7-2/10: "Thank You, Ma'am" by Langston Hughes (symbolism) 6. Week of 2/14-2/17: "The Jacket" by Gary Soto (point of view) 7. Week of 2/27-2/30: "Papa's Parrot" by Cynthia Rylant (theme) 8. Week of 3/14-3/17: "The Party" by Pam Munoz Ryan (conflict) 9. Week of 3/21-3/24: "Seventh Grade" by Gary Soto (Irony) Classes do not build upon previous weeks, and you do not need to attend all nine classes in order to join this course. You can join and leave the class at any time.
