In just 4 sessions, students will learn to outline from larger text, summarize and write content in their own words. Proper Topic and clincher sentences will be practiced to provide clarity.
Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 7
Via a video lesson, (Please note there are no live classes) I will introduce the new concepts. I will go through the source text. I will demonstrate new concepts by complete a sample for the class. The student will then receive an assignment to complete. During the writing process, teacher-student discussion will ensure that the student is on track and feeling confident in their writing. By the end of this 4-session class, students will have written 4 papers/paragraphs. They will understand out to make an outline from a larger text, selecting important and interesting facts, and write it into a paragraph. Students will understand the importance of a clear topic and clincher sentences in a paragraph. They will have learned several "dress-ups" and "sentence opener" style techniques.
I love what IEW does for student's writing. It gives them a clear rubric for what is expected. I have taken my own children through IEW 3 times each! I have taught IEW in a classroom setting for 5 years instructing students and coaching parents. I have expanded my teaching to the online platform and love it.
After each session, the student will have a 1 paragraph paper to write. Participation in-class activities, challenges, and peer reviews will make this a rich experience for students. I desire that each of my students utilize the resources provide for them.
Please be able to submit papers via google docs. Handwritten papers can be scanned or photographed. Before class print the Source Document and Outlining Template 1-2 pieces of lined paper and writing utensils.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I provide positive feedback on papers turned in. I my focus is on the structure and style presented in class. Grammar and spelling corrections are not addressed.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
