Class Experience

Learn to tie your shoes with a school based Occupational Therapist! Kids will work on bilateral coordination, sequencing and fine motor skills while they learn to tie their shoes independently. Students will follow along with me as we learn the tying sequence with songs, chants and stories to help ensure mastery of this activity of daily living. I enjoy interacting with my students and will gladly stay a little after class time to help those that need a little extra practice. Before class it is helpful to work on the traditional first step of shoe tying (making the “X”) with your student. Practice videos are also provided at the end of class with step by step instructions on the adapted version taught in the course as well as the traditional version for when students are ready to advance. The main goal of this class is to teach students an adaptive version to shoe tying that is often easier for children to do independently as their fine motor coordination and strength continue to mature. My goal is for the students to have fun, enjoy each other and to feel as successful and confident as possible with this life skill. *This class works best if a helping hand is near by to optimize your student's success. Kids sometimes get knots that they will need help untying while they are learning.*

(Class is open to all ages and all abilities.)

Feel free to check out an article (link below) I’ve written in the past for teaching children with motor differences how to tie their shoes independently. If you’d like to request a 1:1 class for more individualized learning then send me a request and I’ll gladly consider.

Supply List
***FYI: Most kids have difficulty learning to tie their shoes on the wooden Melissa and Doug shoe as well as on a cardboard cut out. The best way for kids to learn is on an adult shoe or a shoe with long laces.*** Please bring a shoe! Any shoe is fine, but the best shoe to begin with is one with long laces (i.e. adult shoe) and most preferably the thicker/more sturdy laces versus your thin and floppy ones (this will help students gain confidence before advancing to more difficult laces). It is also helpful to have a helping hand nearby during class to offer any hands on support as needed.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Corey Stone and I am a school based Occupational Therapist. I have been a practicing Occupational Therapist for 8 years with the majority of my time spent working in pediatrics. I have been an Occupational Therapist in the hospital, outpatient, mental health, home health and now the school setting. I love to incorporate humor and fun into my classes mixed with a positive mindset approach to teaching. There is no task too big or too hard that we can't accomplish when we put our mind to it and believe in ourselves.

I am the mother of three wild and amazing children ages 6, 4 and 3. Our family loves to travel every chance we get and we live majority of our lives outdoors. I have enjoyed my time teaching on Outschool so much as it has given me the opportunity to meet and interact with so many amazing students from all over the globe. It is such a joy to watch each student work hard towards their goals and accomplish them. I hope to meet your student soon in one of my classes!

Feel free to message me with any course offerings you would like to see and for any questions regarding private sessions to work on fine motor skills, handwriting, etc.
