US Grade 6 - 9
Each lesson, students will be given instruction based on the syllabus listed below. Students will be given time between lessons to check-in with Mr. Wittmer to ask clarifying questions on that lesson's key concept via Outschool communication, or video conference calling. This course is designed for the learners to receive instruction on concepts covered in the Geometry curriculum. Each lesson will explore a major topic that students will see in their Geometry classroom. Each lesson will provide key vocabulary, definitions, examples, explanation of the concepts being taught, and guidance through several examples (ranging in difficulty) that will be worked out as a class. For each lesson students will have the option to print out a Lesson Worksheet and they will have access to the KEY to that Worksheet. Even though we as a class will not have enough time to work through every single problem, students will still have access to all the answers. The last day of class will be a collaborative team Jeopardy showdown having the students demonstrate their understanding of everything that was learned over the span of this course. Each class will be content delivered from Mr. Wittmer via direct instruction/lecture. Following the lesson, students will be given an opportunity to interact and ask questions about the day's lesson and they will be assessed through Google Forms. In addition, Mr. Wittmer will be available via email if there were any questions not answered during the class. PREREQUISITES: Students should possess good problem solving skills, self-advocacy skills, and a willingness to learn in new ways. Some topics students should be comfortable with before this class includes a basic understanding of algebraic concepts such as solving equations and the order of operations. LESSON 1: Polygons • Scope & sequence of Polygons in the geometry curriculum • Key geometry definitions • Key characteristics about polygons • Polygon Chart • Examples • Applications - Word Problems LESSON 2: Triangles • Scope & sequence of Triangles in the geometry curriculum • Classifications of triangles • Area • Examples • Applications - Word Problems • Pythagorean Theorem • Applications - Word Problems • Special Right Triangles LESSON 3: Quadrilaterals • Scope & sequence of Quadrilaterals in the geometry curriculum • QUADRILATERAL WORLD • Quadrilateral World Chart - key characteristics about each Quadrilateral • Examples • Quadrilaterals - Check for Understanding LESSON 4: Cumulative Review • Team Jeopardy • Fun engaging, collaborative cumulative review where students will put their knowledge to the test.
Learning Goals
Students will be giving a crash course on polygons in the Geometry Curriculum as outlined by the Common Core Standards. Students will be able to identify and understand key definitions and properties about polygons, triangles, and quadrilaterals. In addition, students will be able to apply that knowledge in various examples and applications.
This course is meant to give students a small glimpse of the Geometry Curriculum.
