1 in-class hoursClass Experience
Class Experience: In this class we will explore the story of the marvelous, magical fairies in William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Students will have opportunities to learn lines, act out scenes, dance and play as we join the mischievous fairy Puck, the fairy Queen Titania and the Fairy King Oberon in an enchanted wood. Class outline: Introduction: Quick icebreaker game to get to know each other and introduce the play. Movement warm-up: "Over hill, over dale" -- the fairies prepare for a royal celebration. Vocal warm-up: We learn a few lines from the play and practice delivering them in a variety of styles with accompanying facial expressions and gestures. Acting out the story: We choose our roles and use the skills learned in the warm-ups to act out our story. Individual work: We draw our characters and our own unique ideas for further fairy adventures. Sharing: We share our drawings and ideas and work together to create frozen pictures (or tableaux) with our bodies to express the ideas in our drawings and/or imaginations. Closure/Debrief Discussion: Favorite memories from our time together today.
Learning Goals
Students will have fun and use their imaginations as they learn about characters in one of Shakespeare's most popular plays, and gain some basic acting and design skills.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have enjoyed teaching Shakespeare classes for this age group for over 20 years. The stories, language and characters are fascinating to people of ALL ages, and it is my experience that this particular age group is fascinated by the fairy characters in particular. I have directed students in abridged versions of the following Shakespeare plays: Macbeth, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, and Midsummer Night's Dream. As an actor, I have enjoyed playing characters in Midsummer Night's Dream, Othello, Julius Caesar and King Lear.
