Class Experience

In this 12 week class we will sew costumes of characters from My Hero Academia, Marvel, Disney, Sailor Moon, and Star Wars. We will start with My Hero Academia and make a Todoroki costume. We will spend 2 weeks on this costume. The first week will be spent making the pattern and cutting the fabric. Week 2 we will sew the costume together. The next 2 weeks we will make a Black Widow costume. Weeks 5-7 we will make a princess costume. Students can choose their princess and should choose fabric colors accordingly. In these weeks, students can choose if they would like to do an authentic costume or put their own spin on that princess or create their own new princess. In weeks 8-10 we will make a Sailor Moon Costume. The last 2 weeks of class we will make a Rey costume.
When making each costume, we will discuss pattern shapes, how to turn measurements into flat shapes for patterns, and fabric choice. I will sew with the students and walk them through each step. I always encourage students to ask questions throughout class.
Students should be able to use their sewing machine independently and have some experience sewing. I recommend that students have sewn at least one project with a pattern but it is not required.
Students may need to do some work between classes but will be given all of the information they need to complete that work.
When purchasing fabric, I recommend using stretch athleisure fabric for fitted costumes like Black Widow and Todoroki. For all other costumes, students can choose the fabric they think best fits the character.
Students will need all of the materials for the first project at the beginning of the course but can wait to buy materials for the other projects until it is time for us to make those.
