Class Experience

This beginner sewing course takes the creative beginner step by step through proper sewing machine set up and safe machine operation and then efficiently walks them through creating and sewing a nice sized, lined, keepsake bag!

No prior sewing machine knowledge is required.

The ultimate goal isn’t the bag itself but to jump start the beginner's proficiency to independently use all of their sewing machine’s features.

The 8 creative swatches, for the front and back of the bag, are necessary to complete, in order to help them learn to operate their machine, build their sewing confidence, spark their creativity, keep them motivated and ultimately prepare them to sew the entire bag, straps and lining together.

(It’s a well thought out, creative, sneaky, pedagogically sound, practice plan! Shhhhh!)
I’ve designed the tote pattern myself so learners can stay focused on learning their machines, how to measure and how to sew, rather than being bogged down and discouraged by trying to learn to read a pattern, with lots of instructions, at the same time they’re trying to learn about their sewing machines.

This also allows anyone from around the world to take this course.

All of the necessary prep work videos are placed in the classroom each class time. I also supply the full class videos that I use for the flexible schedule course on top of the live teaching time so that your learner is well equipped to be successful, even after the class ends.

Those learners that do not complete this prep work before each class usually struggle with feeling behind. They're not really behind as it's not a requirement to complete the bag in 5 class times.

The live class time with me has been strategically placed during the most difficult or confusing parts of this bag.

To teach this course, I’ve painstakingly made over 450 detailed, custom made Google slides with videos, photos and graphics. I’ve custom made 11 handouts, a photo based supply list, hours of videos and a detailed class schedule to follow.

It took me over 4 months to build, so I do love and appreciate any written feedback and photos for other learners to see.

If your learner would like to work on their own sewing projects and use this as a tutoring class I'm happy to do that as well. I also answer all of their messages between classes and even after the course is completed.

Parents, please understand that teachers keep less than 50% of the list price.

The Outschool fee is -30% for all income teachers make for each class on this platform. Then I have to pay my self-employment taxes, electricity, high speed internet, software subscriptions, and the time to build the courses etc. I also need to be paid for the time I spend answering messages and my energy and time to teach live classes.

Effective June 2023 I’m setting all of my pricing to reflect a one to one class (no more group rate pricing) so that no one has to wait on other learners to enroll before I teach the class.

Extra learners can be added and that income will help fund me so I can make more great courses. Thank you for your support!

Parental Guidance
Adult helpers, you may or may not need to assist your learner, with many different things, during this course but try not to do it during the live class time. Outschool’s policy is that only learners are supposed to be on camera, talking and asking questions of the teacher. There is a lot of work to this course, so you’ll just have to be mindful of what your learner can and cannot handle doing independently, such as using the iron, reading handouts, measuring etc. Please, also make sure that your learner has a sewing manual available for their particular machine since I've not suggested only one type of machine for this course and they will need to refer to it. Reading the manual tends to be one of the most dreaded and difficult for many learners but this is crucial for their success to operate their machine. I do suggest that you look through it with them ahead of time. Allow them to do as much as they possibly can but you’re more than welcome to spend time with them and helping them between classes. Remember, it's not about completing the bag in record time, as it is learning to properly learn to use their machines. Parents, I've also built this course for you to use to be able to assess how well your learner is able to function independently and emotionally through a large detailed course and project. This course will be available for 3 months after the ending date. I know life gets in the way sometimes so just know that that's fine if things get off track. I'm always happy to see bags after the end date!

Supply List Overview

(Please see the PDF attached to your learners inbox welcome letter upon enrollment for the full list with photos)

1. Basic sewing machine and its accessories (button hole maker foot, zipper foot etc.)

***I have many parents ask me for machine suggestions. I definitely wouldn't purchase one of the tiny ones that only does a straight stitch even though yes you can sew on them.
I always suggest that you purchase a name brand machine just in case your learner doesn't enjoy sewing and you can always offload a name brand easier. Ask around, you may be able to borrow one too for this course.

Learners need a basic sewing machine that has these features to be able to complete this course.

I started sewing at age 12 and remember the frustrations I had. I built this course to help young beginners navigate through the first steps of learning to sew but in a fun and creative way.

In high school I took a beginner sewing course for a semester but the teacher realized that I was not a beginner, took me aside the whole semester and tutored me personally to fill in the gaps of my self learning.

I've been sewing and have sewed everything from my own clothes, to all of my bridesmaids dresses, to upholstering furniture and making custom costumes.
